Christmas Event 2015 in General

Here the topic to track and organize our christmas event.

Date : 27 December @12PM CET

Game Mode: Toyland 4h (maybe 20 years ingame or 6h).

Goal of the game: some toys, sweets and fizzy drinks income war (no industry funding) on a big map.

Christmas event in General

Yo, I'm a bit busy also, but I would be up for an event. I can take care of advertisement things. In order to track who's gonna play, as a workaround we can do it through a forum thread at first (old school). Everyone who want's to play could post a message in that thread and we could update the first message in order to track who's gonna play, how it will happen etc. For the config, thanks to dp, we know have a great tool to deal with it, so it should be doable. Solo, do you have access to the moderator forum ? We could give you access to the admin backend where you can play with the config, everything should be possible, I would imagine working on a configuration through the config tool, and test it on our server 0.

Improving citymania in Suggestions

So we never took the time to explain our motivation behind maintaining and making citymania a great openttd community.

As most of you know we come from the luukland experience, that started the great novapolis experience, and we decided to continue the adventure. Our citybuilder mod is our masterpiece, the story of the citybuilder records and all the strategies we developed over the years to obtain that level of gaming is really interesting, and makes our community the one where you go to have an amazing gaming experience. We also have a great quest campaign, that still entertain several players and newcomers every week. Lastly but most important we benefited from the work of several key players and hackers/geeks to achieve to have perfect settings to ensure a great quality of the gaming experience.

We decided to continue the experience, dP, muxy and me, with the support of our moderators and friends team, and thanks to an amazing work from dP, we know have a highly customizable and manageable openttd platform, with a powerful frontend based on an efficient technology stack. The front doesn't show how powerful our system is, but dP keep coming with powerful new features, well thinked and working perfectly.

We are happy with what we did (at least I am ;) ), and we see a bright future for us ^^

Our motivation are simple, pursuing the gaming experience created by luukland and novapolis, we know have perfect foundations, and we are ready for more. Openttd is amazing, not everyone know it and this could be improved.

So I would like to hear all of your ideas to make our gaming experience better, and moreover attract more players, we miss the good old time of luukland busy evening games ;)

Some random thoughts:

  • Improving the landing page : for now we have a blog style feature on our homepage, it's efficient, but we could add a static block of html to explain and sum up what you will find here: best citybuilder experience, gripping quest campaign, on demand goal servers with challenging game configuration, etc...
  • A proper design: The design is basic, it works, it's efficient, but we could easily do a refresh on it. Our tech stack is that simple we could without too much trouble integrate any design so if you have some photoshop skills you could give it a try (we could open another thread for that in case).
  • Some tournaments: we might not be ready to setup easily tournaments or specific game modes, but we are not far, and we could already think of some tournaments. Solo started a great thread about it, quite technical and high level, but with promising ideas, don't hesitate to read carefully, and give us your thoughts.
  • Calendar of events : some tournaments would mean some calendar entries and some more frontend pages, I would love also to know when some players intend to play either coop or solo, and I would try a bit to be able to spectate or participate. Usually I'm around, but some players are not that free, so a sort of calendar were you could add blocks (morning, evening or late afternoon of next 10 days for exaple) and you would click on a block as citymania member to announce you would be around at that moment. Of course our server are irc linked and that works for some players, but that could be of interest.
  • Social networking : twich and youtube could gain some new players, with proper settings, Saber and Gelidis streamings were valuables, I might try to automatize a bit streaming. Other networks are less interesting, facebook seems heavily out of the picture, but maybe twitter/reddit/imgur could help.

Thinking of slighly changing the rules in General

On my side, I have no trouble with most of the rules, and your addendum just makes everything simpler, so I agree with everything (KISS and DRY).

Growing cities seem to be mandatory to do amazing cities in citybuilder mode, I would be ok to have extra rules for citybuilder game. Citybuilder game to aim for solid records are the most interesting to me, playing or watching, and I would be sad to see despr or gelidis to struggle to much with pax/mail during extreme citybuilding, and even more with a high score multiplayer attempt.

Page for rules with pictures and maybe even tutorial would be great. I will open another thread regarding how to improve usability/design of the site.

It seems to be both limited by time and by year on timetabled serve, but when you restart a server it seems it is only 24 years. No big deal tho, a bit time wasted...

New command to restart servers and select game mode in General

That feature is amazing indeed. One problem, I didn't achieve to restart quest server in normal quest 85 temp. tried : !restart temp !restart temp 85 !restart quest temp 85 etc...

I can only do it with ecs, and now we have 2 ecs quest servers ^^

Weekly tournament idea in General

Good idea, its always good to have people around, tournament could be great, and indeed, I remember some magic event in luuk/nova that were really fun. And then we are now missing players, somehow the world has some trouble understanding they need to play openttd.

Playing money should be ok, maybe finding a service who can deal with that should be good, as I'm not sure we want to manage money here ;) Regarding how to share the winning prize, I'm sure you will come up with something interesting, and yeah the goal is to avoid that only the best players get it.

The new servers are now working great, dP did an amazing job, and we have by far the most advanced openttd server. We have no problem of load/speed, we have several servers, and I don't see any reason to even put some more. dP build a new admin interface that give the ability to setup and configure a server from our backend, and use it easily. So right now, we have the possibilities and the tools, we just need to decide what to do with it.

Doing a restart command accessible only to admin and or mod should be doable and not too expensive, but yeah, dP should know better.

I'm willing to review and change how the servers are mapped today, dP also had this idea of killing the gs servers, and we would like to have some goal servers as they attract some other kind of players, I will open a thread about the new setup I guess.

[Obsolete] gs servers in Bugs

Seems it's more like several bugs. I will investigate and track them in our bugtracker, I'm also wondering how we could have a better system for bugtracking, as we have an internal tracker, but we can't open it too much, I will let you know if we found a better solution.

2h City Builder in Suggestions

I think we can dedicate 1 or 2 new servers to this. I think we can have cm18 and cm19. 512*1024 was sometime funny, but size is just some options we need to define together. We are still a bit busy with other stuffs, so we can't do it now, but we will add it to the todo =]

Quest / Goal servers? in General

Hey, It's indeed on our todo list ;) The weather and the summer doesn't help, but it's getting better and better everyday ;)
